This paper presents a computational framework for the optimization and sensitivity analysis of a process whose state depends upon several parameter functions. Assuming that the process is described by a system of quasilinear, parabolic, partial differential equations, we show how determining the problem parameters so as to improve an associated objective functional is directly related to knowing the state function sensitivities. An expression for the gradient of the objective functional in terms of the solutions of an adjoint system enables one to bypass the calculation of state function sensitivities. These concepts are illustrated for a simple model of cooperative processes in chemical kinetics. Since sensitivity analysis and model optimization are important tools for investigating parameter dependence and validating mathematical models, research developments in such diverse fields as optimal design theory, chemical kinetics, and parameter identification are important motivations for this paper.This author would like to gratefully acknowledge Dr. M. The Berge-Fulkerson Conjecture states that every cubic bridgeless graph has six perfect matchings such that every edge of the graph is contained in exactly two of these perfect matchings. In this paper, a useful technical lemma is proved that a cubic graphGadmits a Berge-Fulkerson coloring if and only if the graphGcontains a pair of edge-disjoint matchingsM1andM2 such that (i) M1∪M2induces a 2-regular subgraph ofG and (ii) the suppressed graph, the graph obtained fromG?Miby suppressing all degree-2-vertices, is 3-edge-colorable for eachi=1,2. Let G be a 2-edge-connected simple graph on n≥13 vertices and A an (additive) abelian group with |A|≥4. In this paper, we prove that if for every uv∉E(G), max{d(u),d(v)}≥n/4, then either G is A-connected or G can be reduced to one of K2,3,C4 and C5 by repeatedly contracting proper A-connected subgraphs, where Ck is a cycle of length k. Radial basis functions (RBFs) have found important applications in areas such as signal processing, medical imaging, and neural networks since the early 1980s. Several applications require that certain physical properties are satisfied by the interpolant, for example, being divergence-free in case of incompressible data. In this paper we consider a class of customized (e.g., divergence-free) RBFs that are matrix-valued and have compact support; these are matrix-valued analogues of the well-known Wendland functions. We obtain stability estimates for a wide class of interpolants based on matrix-valued RBFs, also taking into account the size of the compact support of the generating RBF. We conclude with an application based on an incompressible Navier–Stokes equation, namely the driven-cavity problem, where we use divergence-free RBFs to solve the underlying partial differential equation numerically. We discuss the impact of the size of the support of the basis function on the stability of the solution.
